Location
The first two weeks of the course will be conducted in Brisbane, where lectures
will focus on Aboriginal history and traditional cultures. A cultural immersion
field program conducted in a bushland site in Southeast Queensland will take
up the third week. The final week of the program will be conducted in Sydney
and will concentrate on issues of key importance to Aboriginal Australians in
contemporary Australian Society.
Course and Credits Information
This 28 day course will examine the origins and history of Australian Aboriginal
people from both archaeological and "Dreamtime" perspectives. The parts played
by Australian archaeology and anthropology in the development of understanding
of the evolution of humans in general will be explored. The course will examine
key aspects of Aboriginal culture and society, the great diversity of indigenous
Australian cultures, and the environmental factors that have influences the
evolution of that diversity. A major feature of the course will be the high
proportion of the teaching done by indigenous Australians, particularly in the
areas of cultural presentation and interpretation, study of the impacts of European
colonization on Aboriginal society and political issues in Australia. The course
includes a six-day field program in which students will spend time "in the bush"
learning from Aboriginal people about the structure and function of traditional
Aboriginal society and about traditional relationships between the people and
the Land. The program offers 6 anthropology credits from the University of Colorado
at Denver (AN 4995/5995). The university only provides credit for course, not
instruction.
Accommodation
All accommodation is provided and is based on twin and triple share.
Transportation
Students make their own flight arrangements. Airfare may range from $1,000 to
$1,500 per round trip ticket from Denver to Brisbane.
Program costs
The program cost is $3,725. It includes accommodation, most meals, all lectures,
field trips and program excursions. Airfare is not included.
