Location
The University of Sunderland is located in the heart of downtown
Sunderland, a city with an approximate population of 300,000. Located
in the northeastern region of England on the estuary of the River
Wear, the city is on one of the longest and most beautiful stretches
of unspoiled coastline in Great Britain. Situated in an area that
is famous for its warmth and friendliness, Sunderland is a vibrant
city with a rich cultural heritage and a lively nightlife. Nearby
attractions include: St. Peter's church, the National Glass Center
as well as a 200-berth marina and activities center. Sunderland
is also just 30 miles from the cities of Newcastle and Durham and
only one hour from the countryside of Weardale, North Pennines,
and North York Moors.
The University of Sunderland, with an approximate undergraduate
population of 14,000 and an approximate graduate population of 15,000,
offers a diverse and dynamic curriculum. Subject areas in which
undergraduate coursework is offered include: the Arts, Business,
Communications, Computer Science, Design, Education, Engineering,
Environmental Science, Informational Technology, and International
Studies. Subject areas in which graduate coursework is offered include:
the Arts, Business, Communications, Computer Science, Design, Education,
Engineering, Environmental Science, Informational Technology, Health
Sciences, International Studies, and Social Sciences. Courses are
offered on one of two campuses, each a short bus ride away on the
university's free shuttle service. The Chester Road campus is next
to the city center and the St. Peters campus is on the river, just
a short walk from downtown. The university has a large fitness center
and offers many activities and clubs in which students can take
part. Some internship opportunities are available to students and
are normally registered for like any other course. Exchange students
have taken internships for credit in the past. Securing a position
is dependent upon availability as well as the students' skills and
interests.
Accommodation
International students have the option of applying to live in the
university residence halls as well as the university owned and managed
apartment buildings. Upon acceptance to the exchange program, students
should send in their housing applications as soon as possible. Although
international students are given priority for university housing,
quick follow-up will help students to readily secure a position
in campus accommodations. If students prefer to live off-campus,
lists of local apartments can be made available to the student.
Transportation
Students make their own flight arrangements. Typically it is less
costly to fly from Denver to London and then take a train to Sunderland.
Roundtrip airfare from Denver to London may range from $450 to $650.
pproximately $1,000 per semester (includes air fare)
