Location
The exchange institution, the Limburgs Universitair Centrum, is
located on the Limburg University campus in the town of Diepenbeek.
The campus occupies an attractive 150 acre site in the middle of
the Province of Limburg's "green belt", located in the northeastern
region of Flanders, approximately 2.5 miles east of Hasselt and
approximately 60 miles northeast of the capital city of Brussels.
The region has both the advantages of small town life as well as
the perks of being close to the cities of Hasselt and Brussels.
The region is a land of tree-lined canals with a beautiful countryside
and numerous cultural festivals. A range of music and arts activities
are available in the "Cultureel Centrum" in downtown Hasselt. Business
students also have the advantage of being close to Hasselt as it
is the administrative and commercial center of the province. Brussels
is also an extremely exciting and cosmopolitan city. It is home
to both the European Union and NATO, as well as a wealth of international
and trade companies. Belgium's history has always been linked to
both commercial and cultural exchange, so much of its character
as a multicultural, multilingual country is due to its role as the
great meeting place of Western Europe.
Information Courses are taught utilizing a variety of learning activities
including lectures, tutorials, workshops, group work and project
work. Independent learning is also encouraged and students are provided
with state-of-the art study facilities to encourage this process.
Subject areas in which undergraduate and graduate coursework are
offered include: Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, Management,
Marketing as well as other business related coursework. Graduate
students can participate in a portion of the MBA curriculum. Both
graduate and undergraduate business courses available to exchange
students are taught in English. Please check Limburg University
website for more information on courses offered: http://cisa.luc.ac.be/cisa.nsf
Students have the option of taking Dutch language courses if they
choose to do so. However, because courses are taught in English
and most people in Belgium speak English, it is not necessary to
know Dutch to live and study at the Limburgs Universitair Centrum.
It is strongly recommended that both undergraduate and students
participate in a set of activities, which offer an Introduction
to Flemish Society and Culture.
Accommodation
Limburgs Universitair Centrum (LUC) provides accommodations to exchange
students in one of two ways: 1) some rooms are rented by LUC from
local landlords and sublet to exchange students, 2) during the first
semester, some rooms are made available by local students who go
on exchange programs during that semester. Accommodations that are
sublet by the school are close to campus on the streets of Diepenbeek
or in the town center of Hasselt. All rooms available to exchange
students are in dormitory style houses where other exchange students
and/or Flemish students live.
All accommodations sublet by the university are furnished and have
cooking facilities, but students need to supply their own bed linens.
If students are interested in subleasing rooms from the university,
they need to apply in advance through the campus' International
Relations Office. If students are interested in finding their own
apartment, they have the option of using an "accommodation pool"
put together by the LUC Office for Student Affairs. The International
Student Handbook, which students receive upon acceptance into the
program, provides more detailed information on housing as well as
lists of places where students can find temporary accommodations,
if needed.
Transportation
Students make their own flight arrangements. Airfare may range from
$550 to $700 per round trip ticket from Denver to Brussels. Upon
arrival to Brussels airport, students take a train to Hasselt and
a bus from Hasselt to the campus. Program costs The following are
the estimates for some of the expenses students will incur:
