Location
This exclusive arrangement offers students a place to live and work
in the historic town of Feltre, rich in artistic and cultural tradition
and free from touristic trappings.
Participants will be provided a studio space in the historic center
of Feltre - Il Fondaco a sixteenth century building, attributed
to the architect Andrea Palladio. Orientations take place in the
Salla delle Stemme, the town council chambers decorated with Feltre's
family crests over the centuries.
Feltre was established over three and a half thousand years ago,
by the Euganeans before the destruction of Troy. It is astride the
350 mile long Via Claudia Augusta, a Roman road built by the Manenian
tribe in 49-42 BC to link the Adriatic Sea and the Danube. This
placed Feltre in a position of great commercial and political importance.
Destroyed by the Austrian Empire, it was rebuilt in 1512 under the
direction of Andrea Palladio. This is the city which survives today.
It is the Veneto region which gave birth to the practice of oil
painting on canvas, by artists such as Titian, Girgione and the
Bellini brothers. The painter Lorenzo Luzzo lived and worked in
Feltre. It is famous for its exterior frescoes. The ancient stone
and warm colors against a backdrop of the Dolomite Mountains provides
sublime inspiration.
The program grants 3 or 6 credits of intermediate, advanced, or
graduate painting and drawing. Since the program is operated through
CU-Denver, your transcripts will be issued directly by CU-Denver.
All credit is pass-fail unless otherwise arranged. All non-CU-Denver
students must meet with their academic advisor prior to participation.
The program curricular includes studio classes and also presentations
held by local artists and professors, which illuminate past and
contemporary history of the Veneto region. An exhibition is held
of the students work, followed by a reception and farewell party.
Outings include the Dolomite National Park, Venice, Padova, Palladian
Villas and the museum of Canova, presenting ample opportunities
for cultural appreciation and inspiration. Accommodation Students
are provided room and board in the Stella Maris campus, set high
on a hill overlooking the medieval town of Feltre and Dolomite Mountains.
Rooms have double and triple occupancy, with desks, private bathroom
and showers. High quality regional meals are served with full service
at the table. There is also a coffee bar and lounge, TV, telephones
and Internet access.
