Location
The exchange institution, the Lulea University of Technology (LUT),
is located in the capital city of Norbotten County. With a population
of approximately 70,000, Lulea is a very lively place with many
theatres, cinemas, museums, restaurants, and pubs. The city is located
on the northeastern coast of Sweden, just south of the Arctic Circle.
Despite its northerly location, Lulea enjoys fairly mild climates
due to the Gulf Stream that flows along the coast of Sweden although
there is still snow in the winter and sunny, warm days in the summer.
The summer provides great opportunities to spend time at the city's
beautiful beaches. During the winter, although daylight hours are
limited, the people of Lulea are still very active. Both skiing
and snowboarding in the nearby mountains are very popular during
this season. Stretching inland from Lulea are mountains, forests,
and several rivers- a region which is often described as "the last
wilds of Europe". Because Lulea is a seaport, it also provides easy
access to numerous, beautiful islands. The Lulea University of Technology,
with an approximate student population of 8,500 is a modern university
in which technology-related fields of study are certainly a significant
part of the curriculum. Other fields of study, however, also play
a prominent role - such as the Arts, Business, Music, and the Social
Sciences. Many courses are taught in Swedish but equally as many
courses are also taught in English.
Undergraduate coursework in English is available in the following
subjects: Business Administration, Communications, Computer Science,
Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Music, Natural Science/Social
Science Education, and the Social Sciences. Undergraduate coursework
in Swedish is available in the aforementioned subjects as well as
the following areas of study: Drama, Education, and Music. Graduate
coursework is available in English in the following program: Master
of Science Program in Ergonomics as well as 4th year engineering
and business courses that are generally the equivalent to US Master's
courses. Graduate coursework is available in Swedish in the following
subject areas: Business, Education, Engineering, English, Music,
and the Social Sciences. As a student at LUC, you will be able to
make efficient use of your time, since all the buildings and facilitates
you need are within easy reach of each other on the campus. Here
you will find modern remises, a newly built library as well as state-of-the
art equipment in classrooms and laboratories. More information about
the courses taught at LUT can be found on LUT website: http://www.luth.se/publ/stuka/2001/index.en.htm
Exchange students admitted to courses entirely taught in English
are exempt from the requirement for prior knowledge of Swedish.
Because many people in Lulea speak English, it is fairly easy to
survive without Swedish. However, LUT provides you with many opportunities
to take Swedish language courses. An intensive two-week Swedish
course, which starts August 19, 1999 is available free-of-charge
to exchange students during their orientation period prior to the
start of courses. Additional courses will be offered during the
academic year for exchange students.
