Location
The first two weeks of the course will be conducted in Brisbane,
where lectures will focus on Aboriginal history and traditional
cultures. A cultural immersion field program conducted in a bushland
site in Southeast Queensland will take up the third week. The final
week of the program will be conducted in Sydney and will concentrate
on issues of key importance to Aboriginal Australians in contemporary
Australian Society.
This 28 day course will examine the origins and history of Australian
Aboriginal people from both archaeological and "Dreamtime" perspectives.
The parts played by Australian archaeology and anthropology in the
development of understanding of the evolution of humans in general
will be explored. The course will examine key aspects of Aboriginal
culture and society, the great diversity of indigenous Australian
cultures, and the environmental factors that have influences the
evolution of that diversity. A major feature of the course will
be the high proportion of the teaching done by indigenous Australians,
particularly in the areas of cultural presentation and interpretation,
study of the impacts of European colonization on Aboriginal society
and political issues in Australia. The course includes a six-day
field program in which students will spend time "in the bush" learning
from Aboriginal people about the structure and function of traditional
Aboriginal society and about traditional relationships between the
people and the Land. The program offers 6 anthropology credits from
the University of Colorado at Denver (AN 4995/5995). The university
only provides credit for course, not instruction.
